Sperry, Armstrong (1897-1976), was an American author and illustrator of children’s books. Sperry’s interest in the sea began in boyhood, and his great-grandfather told him yarns of his adventures as a sea captain in the South Seas. In 1941, Sperry won the Newbery Medal for Call It Courage (1940).
Sperry was born in New Haven Connecticut, and attended the Yale Art School. Later, he studied art in New York City. Sperry lived in the South Pacific for two years.
