Wanamaker, John (1838-1922), was an American merchant and philanthropist. In 1860, he joined his brother-in-law in founding a clothing business in Philadelphia. This business grew into John Wanamaker & Company, one of the largest department stores in the United States. Wanamaker became active in politics and served as Postmaster General of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He contributed generously to colleges and churches in many parts of the world. He was born in Philadelphia.
