Manning, Timothy (1909-1989), was named a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Paul VI in 1973. Manning was born in County Cork, Ireland, on Sept. 15, 1909. He was ordained a priest in 1934. Manning became a United States citizen in 1944. In 1946, he was ordained a bishop and became auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles. In 1967, he was named the first bishop of Fresno, California. He became archbishop of Los Angeles in 1970 and retired in 1985. Manning died on June 23, 1989.
