Clark, Ann Nolan

Clark, Ann Nolan (1898-1995), was an American author of children’s books. She wrote in a poetic and sympathetic style about Indigenous (native) children of North, Central, and South America, as well as about Vietnamese children. Many of her books stress the conflict children feel when caught between two cultures. Clark won the 1953 Newbery Medal for Secret of the Andes (1952). She also received the Regina Medal in 1963. Her other books include In My Mother’s House (1941), Little Navajo Bluebird (1943), Santiago (1955), World Song (1960), The Desert People (1962), and In the Land of Small Dragon: A Vietnamese Folk Tale (1979).

Ann Nolan was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She married Thomas Patrick Clark in 1919. She worked for many years as an education specialist in the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
