Del Rey, << dehl RAY, >> Lester (1915-1993), was an American author of science fiction. He was noted for the creation of sympathetic, believable characters.
Del Rey’s novels include Nerves (1956), The Eleventh Commandment (1962), and Pstalemate (1971). He also wrote many novels for younger readers, including Marooned on Mars (1952), Cave of Spears (1957), Moon of Mutiny (1961), and Outpost of Jupiter (1963). The Early Del Rey (1975) is a collection of 24 of his early short stories. This book includes an account of his writing career since 1938. Del Rey was the editor of five science fiction magazines. With his fourth wife, Judy-Lynn, he served as a longtime fantasy editor of Ballantine Books, a leading publisher of science fiction.
Del Rey was born on June 2, 1915, in Saratoga, Minnesota, near St. Charles. His real name was Leonard Knapp. During his adult life, he gave conflicting information about the origin of the Lester Del Rey name and many details of his personal life. He died on May 10, 1993.
