Kitasato, Shibasaburo, << kee tah sah toh, shee bah sah boo roh >> (1852-1931), was a Japanese bacteriologist famous for his experiments with diphtheria and tetanus antitoxins. In 1889, he produced the first pure culture of the tetanus germ, which is used to make tetanus vaccine. One of the discoverers of the bubonic plague germ, he developed a serum that helped prevent epidemics. He was born in Kumamoto, Japan.
