Martin, Archer John Porter (1910-2002), was a noted English biochemist. With Richard L. M. Synge, he was awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Martin and Synge did important work in partition chromatography, a method of chemical analysis. Their work led to the use of this technique in separating carbohydrates, amino acids, and other compounds important in biochemistry.
Martin was born on March 1, 1910, in London. He studied at Cambridge and Leeds universities. Later, he became head of the physical chemistry division at the National Institute for Medical Research, in London. Martin died on July 28, 2002.
