McCarran, Patrick Anthony (1876-1954), served as United States senator from Nevada from 1933 to 1954. McCarran sponsored the Internal Security Act of 1950, establishing close controls over Communists, and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, also known as the McCarran-Walter Act, which tightened controls over immigrants. He also wrote several major laws related to air traffic regulation and airports. Although a Democrat, McCarran often opposed the policies of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman.
McCarran was born in Reno, Nevada, on Aug. 8, 1876, and died on Sept. 28, 1954. A statue of McCarran represents Nevada in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
