Tatum, << TAY tuhm, >> Edward Lawrie (1909-1975), an American biochemist, shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for discovering that genes regulate specific chemical processes. He and George W. Beadle found that mutations caused by X rays and biochemical processes are passed on to successive generations. Tatum was born in Boulder, Colorado.
