Handforth, Thomas

Handforth, Thomas (1897-1948), was an American printmaker, illustrator, and author of children’s books. He won the 1939 Caldecott medal for his illustrations for Mei Li (1938), a picture book about a day in the life of a young girl in China. Handforth also wrote the text. He wrote and illustrated another children’s book, Faraway Meadow (1939). Thomas Schofield Handforth was born in Tacoma, Washington.
