McBride, Lloyd (1916-1983), served as president of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA), one of the largest labor unions in the United States, from 1977 to 1983. He had succeeded I. W. Abel, who retired.
McBride was born in Farmington, Missouri. In 1930, at the age of 14, he went to work as a steelworker in St. Louis. McBride became president of a St. Louis local of the USWA in 1938, when he was only 22 years old. From 1965 to 1977, he served as director of a USWA district with headquarters in St. Louis.
As president of the USWA, McBride kept a promise to uphold the union’s no-strike agreement. This agreement prohibits a union from striking during its contract talks with steel companies.
