McGuigan, James Charles

McGuigan, << muh GWIHG uhn, >> James Charles (1894-1974), was a Canadian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was ordained a priest in 1918. He was elevated to archbishop of Regina in 1930, and served as archbishop of Toronto from 1934 to 1971. He was made a cardinal in 1946.

Cardinal McGuigan was born in Hunter River, Prince Edward Island. He studied in Charlottetown at Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan’s University (now joined as the University of Prince Edward Island). He attended the Grand Seminary of Laval University, Quebec, and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
