Nazimova, << nuh ZIHM oh vuh, >> Alla (1879-1945), a Russian actress, became famous on the American stage and in motion pictures. She was one of the first in the United States to show the psychological approach in acting. She played leading parts in the stage plays Ghosts, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, The Cherry Orchard, The Good Earth, and Mourning Becomes Electra. She appeared in such motion pictures as The Bridge of San Luis Rey, In Our Time, and Since You Went Away (all 1944).
Alla Nazimova was born in Yalta, in the Crimea. She performed at the famous Moscow Art Theatre before she came to the United States in 1906.
