Allison, Bobby

Allison, Bobby (1937-…), became one of the most successful and popular drivers in the history of American stock car racing. Allison won the Winston Cup (now NASCAR Cup) Championship in 1983. The NASCAR Cup Championship is the national championship for stock cars—American sedans with many modifications to increase their power and speed. The championship is governed by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). Allison won many honors for his driving, including being named Most Popular Driver six times.

Robert Arthur Allison was born on Dec. 3, 1937, in Miami. He became a stock car racer in 1955 and joined NASCAR’s Grand National (now NASCAR Cup) Series in 1965. Allison won 84 Grand National and Winston Cup races in his career. He retired in 1988. Allison was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993 and into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011. Davy Allison, Bobby’s son, also became an outstanding stock car racer.
