Ford, Harrison (1942-…), is an American motion-picture actor. He is best known as a rugged man of principle in action films. Ford starred in some of the most popular movies in history. By the late 1980’s, he ranked among the most successful movie stars in the world.
Ford was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 13, 1942. He played minor roles on television and in motion pictures in Hollywood in the late 1960’s. Ford dropped out of acting because of the slow progress of his career and became a professional carpenter. He returned to movies in 1973 in a supporting role in American Graffiti, written and directed by George Lucas.
Ford became a star with his performance as the cocky starship captain Han Solo in the popular science-fiction film Star Wars (1977), also directed by Lucas. He played Solo again in the sequels Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Star Wars: Episode VI—Return of the Jedi (1983), and Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens (2015). Ford increased his international reputation as the archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
Ford’s other notable films of the late 1900’s include Blade Runner (1982); Witness (1985); The Mosquito Coast (1986); Working Girl (1988); Patriot Games (1992); The Fugitive (1993); Clear and Present Danger (1994); and The Devil’s Own and Air Force One (both 1997). His films of the early 2000’s include What Lies Beneath (2000); K-19: The Widowmaker (2002); Extraordinary Measures and Morning Glory (both 2010); Cowboys and Aliens (2011); 42 (2013), in which he played the baseball executive Branch Rickey; Ender’s Game (2013); The Expendables 3 (2014); The Age of Adaline (2015); Blade Runner 2049 (2017); and The Call of The Wild (2020). Ford also starred in the TV series “Shrinking” (2022) and “1923” (2022-2023).
Ford married the American actress Calista Flockhart in 2010. In 2002, Ford received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honorary Golden Globe Award. And in 2023, he won an honorary Palme d’Or award for lifetime achievement at the Cannes Festival.
