Letterman, David (1947-…), is a popular American comedian and television personality. He is known for his hip, sophisticated, and sometimes harsh humor . He hosted two long-running late-night variety programs, “Late Night with David Letterman” (1982-1993) and “The Late Show with David Letterman” (1993-May 2015). As host, Letterman became known for his satirical routines and for the unusual material he injected into his shows, such as “Top Ten” lists and “Stupid Pet Tricks.” The American comedian Stephen Colbert began hosting “The Late Show” in September 2015, and the show was renamed “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947, in Indianapolis , Indiana. He graduated from Ball State University in 1970 with a degree in radio and television broadcasting. He was a radio talk show host and television announcer and weatherman in Indianapolis before turning to stand-up comedy . He began appearing in comedy clubs in Los Angeles in 1975 and soon became a frequent guest star on television comedy shows.
Letterman is also a comedy writer and has written material for several TV comedy specials. In addition, Letterman heads Worldwide Pants Incorporated, a television production company. He co-wrote a book of satire, This Land Was Made for You and Me (but Mostly Me) (2013), with Bruce McCall. Letterman became a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2012. In 2018, Letterman began hosting the Netflix TV talk show “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman.”
