Malone, Moses

Malone, Moses (1955-2015), was one of the greatest centers in the history of professional basketball. Malone was a powerful player, standing 6 feet 10 inches (208 centimeters) tall and weighing 260 pounds (118 kilograms). He could score close to the basket and also shoot accurately from farther out on the floor. Malone was a good defensive player and a dominating rebounder. Malone holds the offensive rebound records in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for a career, a single season, and a single game. He was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 1978-1979, 1981-1982, and 1982-1983 seasons.

Moses Eugene Malone was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on March 23, 1955. He was one of the few players to successfully advance from high school to professional competition without playing in college. Malone began his career in 1974 with the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association. He joined the NBA in 1976 and played with seven teams during his 19 years in the NBA. Malone averaged 20.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game during his NBA career. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. Malone died on Sept. 13, 2015.
