Newton, Wayne (1942-…), is a popular American entertainer who gained his greatest fame as a singer in Las Vegas hotels. His pleasing stage personality and mellow voice won him fans with both pop music and country music listeners. Newton has also received awards for his humanitarian activities for medical research and for Native American causes.
Carson Wayne Newton was born on April 3, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia. He dropped out of high school in 1959 and performed at the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas from that year to 1963. The American singer Bobby Darin discovered Newton singing in a New York City hotel in 1963 and produced Newton’s first hit record, “Danke Schoen” (1963). His other hit recordings include “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” (1965) and “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast” (1972). Newton began singing in major Las Vegas hotels in the late 1960’s and soon became one of the city’s biggest stars. Newton performed in Branson, Missouri, during much of the 1990’s but returned to performing mainly in Las Vegas in 2000. He wrote an autobiography, Once Before I Go (1989).
