Nimoy, Leonard

Nimoy, Leonard (1931-2015), was an American actor and film director who became famous as Mr. Spock, an alien in the science-fiction television series “Star Trek” (1966-1969). Nimoy also played the character in several motion pictures based on the TV series.

Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931, in Boston. He made his motion-picture debut in 1951 and appeared in several movies and plays until he joined “Star Trek” in 1966 as the brilliant and emotionless half-Vulcan Spock, an officer on the starship Enterprise. Nimoy appeared in several “Star Trek” movies, beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and ending withStar Trek (2009). He also directed the third and fourth “Star Trek” films, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).

Nimoy starred in the TV series “Mission Impossible” from 1970 to 1972 and appeared in the science-fiction TV series “Fringe,” starting in 2009. He also directed several movies, including Three Men and a Baby (1987) and Holy Matrimony (1994). He performed on the stage both on Broadway and in touring productions and appeared in many television shows. Nimoy published poetry and composed and recorded popular music. He wrote an autobiography, I Am Not Spock (1975), and an account of his career as Spock in I Am Spock (1995). He provided the voice of the robot leader Sentinel Prime in the science-fiction action film Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). Nimoy died on Feb. 27, 2015.
