O’Connor, Carroll (1924-2001), an American actor, gained fame as the bigoted blue-collar character Archie Bunker on television. O’Connor played Bunker on the immensely popular comedy series “All in the Family” from 1971 to 1979 and continued the character on “Archie Bunker’s Place” (1979-1983).
O’Connor appeared as a supporting actor in many movies and TV shows during the 1960’s before gaining instant fame as the narrow-minded but lovable Archie Bunker. He won four Emmy Awards as best actor for his performance as Archie. He also starred in the TV dramatic series “In the Heat of the Night” (1987-1990), winning another Emmy as a Southern sheriff. O’Connor made his motion-picture debut in By Love Possessed (1961). His other movies include Lonely Are the Brave (1962), In Harm’s Way (1965), For Love of Ivy (1968), Marlowe (1969), and Law and Disorder (1974).
O’Connor was born in New York City on Aug. 2, 1924. He received a degree from the National University of Ireland in 1952 and acted in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and France from 1950 to 1954. He made his stage debut in New York City in 1958. He died on June 21, 2001.
