Osmond, Donny (1957-…), is a popular American singer and musical comedy star. Osmond is known for his wholesome personality and boyish good looks. He has appeared on the stage and on television, and he also has recorded many albums of pop music, several with his sister Marie Osmond.
Donald Clark Osmond was born in Ogden, Utah, on Dec. 9, 1957. He began his show-business career at the age of 4 performing with the Osmond family singing group. This group, known as the Osmonds, consisted of Donny and his brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay. Donny sang with his brothers regularly on the Andy Williams television variety show from 1963 to 1967. They then performed on the Jerry Lewis television show from 1967 to 1969. The Osmonds recorded several hit songs in 1971, beginning with “One Bad Apple.”
Donny began his solo career in 1971. He recorded several hits during the early 1970’s, including “Sweet and Innocent” (1971), “Go Away Little Girl” (1971), “Hey Girl” (1971), “Puppy Love” (1972), “Too Young” (1972), “Why?” (1972), “The Twelfth of Never” (1973), and “When I Fall in Love” (1973). He also recorded two hit duets with Marie, “I’m Leaving It Up to You” (1974) and “The Morning Side of the Mountain” (1975). He and Marie hosted the “Donny and Marie” television variety show from 1976 to 1979.”
Osmond starred briefly in a revival of George M. Cohan’s musical Little Johnny Jones in 1982. During the 1990’s, Osmond toured in an extremely popular production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
From 1998 to 2000, Osmond and his sister Marie starred in their own syndicated television talk show. Osmond’s autobiography, Life Is Just What You Make It: My Story So Far, was published in 1999.
