Tilson Thomas, Michael (1944-…), is an American orchestra conductor who has been praised for his broad repertoire, which extends from Renaissance music of the 1400’s to modern electronic music. Tilson Thomas is known for his outgoing conducting style and for his ability to build original concert programs. He has conducted many of the world’s major symphony orchestras and was music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 1995 to 2020. In addition, he has conducted operas. Tilson Thomas is also a skilled classical pianist.
Tilson Thomas was born on Dec. 21, 1944, in Los Angeles, California. He began studying piano as a child and later studied composition and conducting. In 1969, Tilson Thomas was appointed assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He achieved recognition almost immediately when he substituted for conductor William Steinberg, who was ill, during a concert in New York City. Tilson Thomas was appointed associate conductor of the orchestra in 1970 and principal guest conductor in 1972.
Tilson Thomas served as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1971 to 1979 and has conducted at several international music festivals. He served as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 1995. In 1987, Tilson Thomas founded the New World Symphony, an orchestral academy in Miami Beach, Florida, for graduates of high level music programs. He also serves as the organization’s artistic director and conductor. He has recorded both as a conductor and pianist and has composed several works. In 2020, Tilson Thomas stepped down as music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. However, he retained the title of music director laureate and was to continue to conduct the orchestra at least four weeks each season.
