Agar is a jellylike substance obtained from certain seaweeds. Agar is used as a culture medium, a base in which to grow bacteria for scientific work. It is also used in the preparation of some food and in medicines. The agar seaweeds are of the red algae variety. They occur in tropical Asia and along the Pacific Coast of the United States.
