Alcuin (735-804) was an English scholar, teacher, and writer. He studied at the cloister-school of York, the center of learning in England at that time. Alcuin became an adviser to Emperor Charlemagne in 782 (see Charlemagne ). Alcuin’s knowledge of the achievements of Anglo-Saxon scholarship helped to bring about the revival of learning known as the Carolingian Renaissance. He made many educational reforms and was a leading member of Charlemagne’s academy.
Alcuin was born in York. In 796, Charlemagne made him abbot of St. Martin at Tours, in France.
