Ascham, Roger (1515-1568), was tutor to Lady Jane Grey and Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I of England). Ascham, wrote The Schoolmaster (1570). In this book, Ascham expressed views on education, based on his experience. He stressed the importance of reading. Ascham was born in Kirby Wiske, near Northallerton, in northern England. He died in London on Dec. 30, 1568.
