Beaton, Sir Cecil

Beaton, Sir Cecil (1904-1980), a British artist, designer, and photographer, published many books of photographic studies. His subjects included the royal family, ballet, fashion, and cities of the world. His drawings and photographs illustrated many books. He also designed scenery and costumes for ballets, motion pictures, operas, and theatrical productions, including Lady Windermere’s Fan, Quadrille, My Fair Lady, and Gigi. In addition, he wrote a play, The Gainsborough Girls.

Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton was born in London and educated at Harrow and at Cambridge University. He was knighted in 1972.
