Bophuthatswana was one of 10 homelands set up by the South African government under the former policy of enforced racial segregation known as apartheid. Bophuthatswana, like the other homelands, was reserved for Black people. It was self-governing in theory but had no real power. Bophuthatswana was home to about 2.5 million Setswana-speaking people. Bophuthatswana was reincorporated into South Africa in 1994. Most of what was Bophuthatswana now lies in the province of North West. Part of the former homeland lies in the province of Free State.
