Brook, Peter (1925-2022), was a British stage and motion-picture director. He first achieved fame for his stage productions, especially strikingly original versions of plays by William Shakespeare. Brook’s best-known Shakespearean productions included King Lear in 1962 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1970. He won international acclaim for his direction of the experimental play Marat/Sade in 1964. Brook also directed operas and musicals. He designed the sets and composed the music for several of his productions. Brook directed such films as The Beggar’s Opera (1953), Lord of the Flies (1963), and The Tragedy of Carmen (1983). Peter Stephen Paul Brook was born on March 21, 1925, in London. He died on July 2, 2022.
