Caratacus

Caratacus was king of the Catuvellauni, a powerful British tribe at the time of the Roman invasion of Britain in A.D. 43. Caratacus led the Catuvellauni when they were defeated by the Romans at the Battle of the Medway. He escaped and carried on successful guerrilla warfare against the Romans. He lost a hard-fought battle in A.D. 51 in Wales. He took refuge with a northern tribe, the Brigantes, whose Queen Cartimandua gave him up to the Romans. Caratacus was a son of Cunobelinus (also called Cunobelin). See Cunobelinus .
