Cytology is the study of the internal structure and organization of cells. Microscopic studies of the structure of the cell provided an explanation of cell division and served as a foundation for genetics. These studies also showed that each structure has some function, and that each cell activity is related to changes in chemicals that make up the cell. Cytochemistry is the study of chemical activities inside cells.
