Most of the land around the city is hilly. But the main commercial and industrial areas, together with the university campus and recreational and residential areas, have all been reclaimed from the harbor.

Dunedin is the largest center in the South Island for selling fine wool. Woolen mills are among the city’s main industries. The Port of Otago, which includes Dunedin and Port Chalmers, is mainly an exporting port for wool, frozen meat, fruit, and processed meat products.
