Fukuoka (pop. 1,612,392) is an important commercial center of the island of Kyushu, in Japan. The city stands on Hakata Bay, in the northwestern part of the island. Its factories produce many products, including dolls, electrical goods, paper, pottery, rubber, and textiles. Fukuoka’s exports include bamboo, machinery, and plate glass. Coal fields lie nearby. Kyushu University, founded in 1911 as Kyushu Imperial University, is in Fukuoka.
