Gateshead (pop. 196,151) is an industrial center and metropolitan district in Tyne and Wear, England. The town of Gateshead stands alongside the south bank of the River Tyne, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne and about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from the North Sea. The Metro center is one of Europe’s largest shopping precincts. Gateshead is a manufacturing center and has various industries that use steel, including light engineering. The Team Valley Trading Estate has factories producing chemicals, electronic equipment, glass, and textiles.
