Bologna, University of

Bologna, << buh LOHN yuh, >> University of, in Bologna, Italy, is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was formed about 1100, having developed from an association of law teachers and their students. The university was famous throughout Europe during the rest of the Middle Ages for its schools of civil law and liberal arts. The poets Dante and Petrarch studied there. The university is a state-supported coeducational institution.
