Lake Manapouri

Lake Manapouri is one of the most beautiful lakes in the South Island of New Zealand. The lake is also the site of a large underground hydroelectric power station. Manapouri is a Māori word meaning lake of the sorrowing heart. The lake is 12 miles (19 kilometers) long at its longest part, 6 miles (10 kilometers) wide at its widest part, and 1,420 feet (433 meters) deep. It is dotted with islands. The area around Lake Manapouri is a popular holiday resort.
