Montego Bay (pop. 110,115) is the second largest city in Jamaica. Only Spanish Town is larger. The population of Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, is smaller than that of Montego Bay, but Kingston’s metropolitan area population is much larger. Montego Bay lies about 85 miles (137 kilometers) northwest of Kingston. The city overlooks the bay of the same name, an inlet of the Caribbean Sea extending about 20 miles (32 kilometers) along Jamaica’s northwest coast. Montego Bay is Jamaica’s principal tourist center. It provides hotel and guest house accommodations, conference facilities, and resort attractions. It offers fine beaches, yachting, and water sports and scuba diving activities.
