Rotherham (pop. 265,807) is a district in South Yorkshire Metropolitan County, England. The district covers 110 square miles (285 square kilometers) and centers on the town of Rotherham.
Rotherham’s industries include glassmaking, food processing and manufacturing, and a variety of light manufacturing and engineering industries. For many years, the two main industries were coal mining and iron and steel production. These activities have declined, although steelmaking remains important.
Open countryside with mixed farming makes up a majority of the area of Rotherham. There are three country parks, including Rother Valley Country Park, a leading tourist attraction. The area’s many interesting and historic buildings include Wentworth Woodhouse and the ruins of Roche Abbey near Maltby. Catcliffe glass kiln, built in 1740, is the oldest surviving kiln of its kind in Europe.
