Takahē << tah KAH hay >> is a flightless bird that lives only in New Zealand. The takahē has deep blue and olive-green feathers. Its bill and legs are thick and reddish. The takahē reaches about 20 inches (50 centimeters) tall. An adult may weigh more than 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms). The birds eat seeds and the soft stems of plants. They make grass nests on the ground and line them with leaves. Scientists once believed that takahē were extinct. But in 1948, takahē were rediscovered on the South Island of New Zealand. They are extremely rare.
