Ulm, Charles

Ulm, Charles (1898-1934), an Australian aviator , helped to pioneer flying in Australia . During the late 1920’s, he flew with fellow Australian Charles Kingsford Smith . They made a record-breaking flight circumnavigating (flying completely around) Australia in 10 days 5 1/2 hours in 1927. They made the first transpacific flight in 1928. In 1934, Ulm flew from Britain to Australia in a new record time of 6 days 17 hours 45 minutes. That same year, he also made the first official airmail flight between Australia and New Zealand .

Charles Thomas Phillipe Ulm was born in Melbourne on Oct. 18, 1898. In September 1934, Ulm disappeared on a test flight over the Pacific between Oakland, California, and Hawaii. No trace of his plane, Stella Australis, or its crew was ever found. Ulm and his crew were presumed to be killed.
