Viburnum is a group of shrubs and small trees known for their white or pinkish flowers. There are dozens of species (kinds). Most are native to warm parts of Asia and North America. Viburnums typically have white or pinkish flowers, often arranged in dense, round heads.
Viburnums are grown for their showy, scented flowers. These flowers often appear before the foliage. People also grow viburnums for their berries, which may be yellow, red, or black. Guelder rose is a European species cultivated for its large flowers, like snowballs. Arrowwood and several other North American species were used as medicine by Native Americans. The plants were used to relieve cramps and other ailments. Viburnums grow best in fertile, moist soil. They prefer a sheltered, sunny position.
