Weald is a region in southern England between the North Downs and the South Downs in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. The name weald is the Old English word for forest. In Saxon times, the region was thickly wooded. Most of the forest was cleared later to provide charcoal for local industries. The Weald is now farmland.
