Dell, Michael (1965-…), is the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Dell Inc., one of the world’s largest high-technology companies. Dell Inc. sells custom-ordered computers directly to people and businesses. Dell also makes servers—that is, computers that provide requested resources to other computers linked on a network. In addition, Dell manufactures computer storage systems, printers, and other electronic products.
Michael Saul Dell was born in Houston on Feb. 23, 1965. While attending the University of Texas in 1983, he began selling rebuilt computers from his dormitory room. He called his business PC’s Ltd. In 1984, he dropped out of the university to run the company, which was renamed Dell Computer Corporation. Dell became a publicly owned company in 1988 and was immediately successful with its direct-to-the-customer sales approach. In 2003, the company was renamed Dell Inc. In 2004, Michael Dell stepped down as chief executive officer of Dell Inc., a position he had held since the company was founded. He resumed his duties as chief executive officer in early 2007. In 2013, shareholders approved a $24.9-billion buyout deal by Michael Dell to take the company private. In 2018, Dell once again made the company public and listed it on the New York Stock Exchange
