Arthur’s Pass is a route across the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana in the South Island of New Zealand. It links Christchurch by road with Greymouth. It reaches a height of 3,018 feet (920 meters) above sea level. The Otira tunnel carries the railway linking Christchurch with Greymouth under the pass. The area around the pass is a national park. Sir Arthur Dobson, a British surveyor, explored the pass in 1864. A road was first built over the pass in 1866.
