The town of Mansfield is a busy commercial center, with open-air markets and numerous shops. Leading businesses in the region include plastics molders, precision engineering firms, and tool manufacturers. Education, health care, and other service industries also contribute to the economy.

Mansfield has been a center of trade since at least 1227, when King Henry III gave the town a charter as a market town. Historically, farming and stone quarrying also contributed to Mansfield’s economy. Coal mining was the region’s major industry from the late 1800’s to the late 1900’s.
