Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee, is the former home of rock music star Elvis Presley, who died there in 1977. The 23-room mansion is one of the most visited buildings in the United States.
Visitors to Graceland may tour its main floor and lower level as well as the grounds of the estate, which covers about 14 acres (5.7 hectares). Presley and members of his family are buried in a garden on the estate. Presley’s film and stage costumes and other mementos of his life are exhibited in a building next to the house. The estate’s other attractions include Presley’s private jet airplane and a number of his automobiles.
Presley bought Graceland in 1957 for about $100,000. He died there on Aug. 16, 1977, at the age of 42. Presley’s former wife, Priscilla, the executor of his estate, opened Graceland to the public in 1982. In 2006, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated Graceland a national historic landmark.
