Palikir, << PAHL ih kuhr >> (pop. 6,227), is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), an island nation in the North Pacific Ocean. Palikir stands on Pohnpei, the largest of the FSM’s more than 600 islands.
Palikir consists mainly of government buildings. Many of the people who work in Palikir live in nearby Kolonia, the state capital of Pohnpei. Kolonia was formerly the national capital of the FSM. In 1989, the government’s administrative offices moved to Palikir.
