Baylor University

Baylor University in Waco, Texas, is the largest Baptist university in the world and the oldest university in Texas. The Republic of Texas chartered the university in 1845. It was founded by District Judge R. E. B. Baylor and Baptist ministers James Huckins and William M. Tryon. The university is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Baylor University was originally in Independence, Texas. It moved to Waco in 1886 when it merged with Waco University. The university’s athletic teams are called the Bears. Well-known graduates of Baylor University include author Robert Fulghum and Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson.
