Bradley University is a private, independent coeducational institution in Peoria, Illinois. It was founded in 1897 as Bradley Polytechnic Institute by Lydia Moss Bradley. She founded the school as a memorial to her deceased children and to her husband, Tobias. Bradley Polytechnic became a four-year college in 1920. In 1946, Bradley became a university and began to offer graduate programs. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Braves. Well-known Bradley graduates include Congressman Robert H. Michel of Illinois and former chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili.
