Canisius College

Canisius College is a private, independent institution of higher education in Buffalo, New York. It was founded as a men’s college in 1870 by the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, a Roman Catholic religious order. The founders named the institution for Saint Peter Canisius, a Jesuit missionary who lived in Germany in the 1500’s. Canisius College began to admit women in 1965. The college’s athletic teams are called the Golden Griffins.
