Detroit Mercy, University of, is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in Detroit. The university is the largest Catholic university in Michigan. It is affiliated with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and the Religious Sisters of Mercy. The university was formed from the merger of two established colleges. The Jesuit order of Catholic Priests founded the University of Detroit in 1877. The Religious Sisters of Mercy founded Mercy College of Detroit in 1941. In 1990, these universities united to become the University of Detroit Mercy. The university’s athletic teams are called the Titans.
